Custom-made products
Cam Bioceramics produces its powders with the highest purity and reproducibility properties currently available on the orthopaedic market. All calcium phosphate products are stoichiometrically produced. The powders are available from a 100% hydroxyapatite (HA) to a 100% tricalcium phosphate (α- or ß-TCP) and in a variety of HA / ß-TCP ratios.
Unlike most other biphasic calcium phosphates, our products are not just a mixture of hydroxyapatite and ß-tricalcium phosphate. Ordinary mixtures do not guarantee the exact and reproducible distribution of elements. We synthesize the HA / ß-TCP combination, creating a new molecule with new characteristics. This has the advantage that the two elements in the powder are equally distributed without clustering. The molecule remains constant throughout the whole process of resorption and bone formation, reducing the risk of cavities or fibrous bone ingrowth to almost zero.
Depending on our customer’s specifications, Cam produces its calcium phosphate powders in a wide variety of multi-phase HA / TCP ratios after which the product is sintered. Customers can also request their product to meet custom specifications in the areas of resorption, density, sphericity and crystallinity.
- A variety of precursor (unsintered), calcinated and sintered powders with a mean particle size of 20 - 30 microns are available
- All powders and particles are stoichiometrically produced
- Different sinter temperatures are available on request
Can Bioceramics has always produced its own bioceramic coating powders. We found out long ago that we could best achieve the desired material characteristics by varying the bioceramic parameters in the early stage of preform production. Here, we determine exactly which resorption, micro and macro porosity, crystallinity, density, adhesion, or compressive strength must be achieved. More importantly, we do so by creating new, single molecules that contain these characteristics instead of mixing components later in the process when their individual, chemical behavior has already established itself and can no longer be changed.
This can only be achieved when Calcium Hydroxide, the base material in the process, is of absolute purity. Unfortunately, Calcium Hydroxide is a natural resource and is usually polluted with a diversity of trace elements. We continuously search for batches of Calcium Hydroxide that are below well-defined thresholds of those elements we know to have a negative impact on the desired material characteristics.
Another important product feature is sphericity which, depending on the application, may play a critical role in certain soft-tissue applications. Cam Bioceramics has developed patented, ultra-smooth, dense particles that facilitate the use of bioceramic materials not only in bone, but also specifically in soft tissue.
Our expertise enables us to develop custom-made bioceramic materials for a wide range of biomedical applications and an increasing number of customers, each with their own specifications. Started over 20 years ago as one of the pioneers in the field of bioceramic coatings, Cam Bioceramics is now researching new bioceramic materials and developing new materials for medical applications on a daily basis.
